The most played rivalry in the NFL opens the 2026 season with a Monday night statement game at Lincoln Financial Field. The Philadelphia Eagles, reigning NFC East champions, host the Dallas Cowboys — a team retooled after a difficult 2025 — in what amounts to the first real NFC East power declaration of the year.

Dak Prescott has returned healthy after a shoulder injury that cost him six games in 2025. CeeDee Lamb, despite Philadelphia's best attempts to limit him, remains one of the two or three best wide receivers in football. Against the Eagles' elite defensive front, every snap is a test. The Linc in September, under Monday night lights, is one of the loudest environments in the sport.

Tactical Breakdown

Dallas Cowboys Offense

Mike McCarthy's offense is Prescott-centered but now leans harder on CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens — an elite two-receiver set that creates genuine mismatches in press coverage. The run game struggled in 2025 after the Ezekiel Elliott era ended; how the Cowboys establish any ground game against Philadelphia's defensive line is the key question.

Philadelphia Eagles Defense

Philadelphia's front four — led by Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis — is the best in the NFC. Nick Sirianni's defense generates interior pressure without blitzing, forcing quarterbacks to deal with a collapsing pocket. Darius Slay and Cooper DeJean are elite on the outside; Dallas's receivers will have to earn every yard.

Philadelphia Eagles Offense

Jalen Hurts runs the most complete offense in the NFC. Saquon Barkley's explosiveness forces defenses to commit extra run defenders, opening play-action opportunities downfield. DeVonta Smith's route running and Jahan Dotson's yards-after-catch ability give Hurts two reliable outlets on every third down.

Dallas Cowboys Defense

Dan Quinn's defense needs a strong showing after a 2025 season where Dallas allowed 22+ points in seven games. Micah Parsons' departure to Green Bay via trade created a gaping edge-rush hole. Demarcus Lawrence and the young Cowboys linebackers must contain Barkley's receiving ability out of the backfield — the Eagles exploit that matchup ruthlessly.

Key Matchups to Watch

CeeDee Lamb vs Eagles Secondary

Darius Slay shadowed Lamb for three quarters in their 2025 matchup and held him to 58 yards. Lamb is too good for that to happen twice. Cooper DeJean's emergence as a slot weapon has freed Slay to travel — if Slay follows Lamb, George Pickens becomes the primary target on the opposite side.

Jalen Hurts vs Cowboys Pass Rush

Dallas generated only 28 sacks in 2025 after losing Parsons — a dramatic drop from their 2023 peak. Hurts scrambles for positive yards at a league-leading rate. Without a consistent edge rusher to set the corner, the Cowboys' secondary will be asked to cover on extended plays.

Saquon Barkley vs Dallas Front Seven

Barkley torched Dallas for 147 yards and two touchdowns in their 2024 meeting. He followed with 134 yards in 2025. The Cowboys know what's coming — they still can't stop it. How long Philadelphia commits to the run before opening the play-action game determines the final margin.

Fan Poll: Who Wins?
Model Prediction
Eagles 31 — Cowboys 17
Philadelphia wins · Confidence: 68%

The Eagles are simply the better team right now, and the gap between these franchises widened in 2025. Prescott's health returning is good news for Dallas, but their offensive line and pass rush deficiencies are structural problems, not flukes. Hurts should be sharp in a home opener, and the crowd at The Linc will make every third-down conversion feel like a fourth-quarter play.
