AFC West 2026 Preview: Can Anyone Knock Off Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs?
The AFC West: Mahomes' Kingdom
Since Patrick Mahomes took the reins in Kansas City, the AFC West has been a one-team division in terms of outcomes. The Chiefs have won the division in every season Mahomes has started, and they enter 2026 as the prohibitive favorite yet again. But the division's three other franchises have made notable moves this off-season, and 2026 could be the year the West gets interesting.
Kansas City Chiefs: The Standard
Head Coach: Andy Reid | QB: Patrick Mahomes
Kansas City's fourth championship in six years confirmed what everyone already suspected: this is a dynasty. Andy Reid's system continues to generate high-percentage throws for Mahomes, the offensive line has improved, and the defense is built around speed and versatility. The Chiefs' biggest challenge in 2026 is complacency — but Reid and Mahomes have shown zero signs of letting that creep in.
Prediction: AFC West Champions, 13–4
Los Angeles Chargers: The Most Interesting Threat
Head Coach: Jim Harbaugh | QB: Justin Herbert
Jim Harbaugh's arrival in Los Angeles was supposed to change everything for the Chargers, and his first season delivered on that promise in terms of culture and organizational discipline. Justin Herbert is a top-five quarterback when healthy, and Harbaugh's system maximizes the run game in ways that create easier throws down the field. If the Chargers' offensive line holds up and their pass rush generates consistent pressure, they're the best bet to challenge KC in the AFC West.
Prediction: Wild Card, 10–7
Las Vegas Raiders: Searching for Identity
Head Coach: Antonio Pierce | QB: Gardner Minshew
The Raiders are in a transitional phase. Allegiant Stadium is one of the most visually spectacular venues in sports, and Raider Nation is as passionate as any fanbase in football — but the roster lacks the top-end talent required to contend in a division with Mahomes. Gardner Minshew is a capable caretaker, but the Raiders need a long-term answer at quarterback to become relevant.
Prediction: Third Place, 7–10
Denver Broncos: The Bo Nix Experiment
Head Coach: Sean Payton | QB: Bo Nix
Sean Payton is one of the great offensive minds of his generation, and Bo Nix showed genuine flashes of competence as a rookie. The Broncos' defense is legitimately good — their front seven can disrupt opposing offenses — and Mile High remains one of the toughest environments for visiting teams. But Nix needs to take a significant leap in year two for Denver to exceed expectations.
Prediction: Fourth Place, 8–9
Division Outlook
The AFC West is Kansas City's to lose. Mahomes and Reid have too many structural advantages — salary cap management, organizational culture, playoff experience — for any of the three challengers to realistically overtake them in 2026. The most likely outcome is the Chiefs winning 12 or more games, with the Chargers fighting for a wild card spot and the Broncos and Raiders developing for future seasons.
