49ers vs Seahawks 2026 Week 1 Preview: NFC West Showdown at Lumen Field

San Francisco 49ers vs Seattle Seahawks
San Francisco 49ers
2025: 10-7
Seattle Seahawks
2025: 14-4
The reigning Super Bowl LX champions host their most dangerous division rival to open the 2026 season. The Seattle Seahawks — winners of Super Bowl LX behind Sam Darnold's breakout campaign and JSN's 1,793-yard season — are now the establishment. San Francisco arrives at Lumen Field determined to prove the NFC West has a new contender.
Brock Purdy's 2025 season was disrupted by injury and a defense that struggled to stop top offenses. Kyle Shanahan rebuilt the roster around Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle heading into 2026, while Seattle must prove that last year's championship was a sustainable blueprint and not a one-season aberration. The Seahawks at home in Week 1 is as difficult a road opener as any team in the NFC will face.

San Francisco 49ers Offense
Kyle Shanahan's scheme is the NFL's most adaptable offense. McCaffrey as the engine — pass-catching, inside runs, outside zone — creates mismatches that no single defensive alignment solves. Kittle's blocking and receiving versatility makes him the scheme's cornerstone. The question is Purdy: his accuracy in a hostile environment and his ability to manage Seattle's blitz packages.
Seattle Seahawks Defense
Seattle's defense after the Super Bowl run added depth at corner and safety. Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon form one of the best young corner tandems in the NFC. The Seahawks' front four generates consistent pressure with Uchenna Nwosu leading the edge rush. They held opposing offenses to 18.7 PPG in 2025 — best in the NFC.
Seattle Seahawks Offense
Sam Darnold operating in Pete Carroll's (new OC-led) west coast system has been transformed. JSN's 1,793-yard AP OPoY season demonstrated the upside of this receiver-QB pairing. Cooper Kupp, signed from the Rams, adds a veteran slot presence. Charbonnet provides the ground-and-pound balance in the run game.
San Francisco 49ers Defense
San Francisco's defense, anchored by Nick Bosa and the rebuilt secondary, must contain JSN's routes over the middle. The 49ers' pass rush — one of the best in the NFC when healthy — is the primary path to disrupting Darnold's rhythm. If Bosa can generate consistent one-on-one pressure in the first half, San Francisco keeps this competitive.
Key Matchups to Watch
Brock Purdy vs Seattle Secondary
Purdy has been exceptional in controlled environments but tested in hostile road games. Lumen Field is the loudest stadium in the NFC West — communication pre-snap is difficult. The Seahawks' corner duo is elite. Purdy's quick-release game must neutralize Seattle's zone before Shanahan can open up the field for bigger plays.
JSN vs 49ers Secondary
Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 1,793 receiving yards and 14 TDs in 2025 — one of the best wide receiver seasons in recent memory. The 49ers' outside corners struggled against top receivers. Expect Seattle to target the outside matchup repeatedly, forcing San Francisco into bracket coverage that opens the run game.
Christian McCaffrey vs Seahawks Front Seven
McCaffrey is the most versatile offensive weapon in football. His 2,300 total yards in 2024 established him as the game's best all-purpose back. Seattle's linebackers are solid but not elite in coverage. Shanahan will use McCaffrey in the flat on early downs to test the Seahawks' pursuit angles before opening the play-action over the top.
Consensus lines. Subject to change. Bet responsibly.
Defending champions at home in Week 1 with a roster built specifically to repeat — this is the Seahawks' moment. Lumen Field is one of the hardest road environments in the NFC, and Purdy has not consistently shown he can win in the loudest stadiums. Seattle's defensive advantage in the secondary is real, and JSN against San Francisco's rebuilt corners will produce big moments early. The 49ers keep it interesting but fall just short.
