2026 NFL Breakout Player Predictions: Five Stars Ready to Explode
Every Season Has Its Breakout Stars
Part of what makes the NFL endlessly compelling is the player who emerges from relative obscurity to become a household name. The 2026 season will have its own version of that story — a receiver who explodes for 1,200 yards, a linebacker who leads the league in sacks, a quarterback who takes the leap from promising to elite. Here are five players we're predicting will break out.
1. Drake Maye — New England Patriots, QB
The hype around Maye has been building since his selection with the third overall pick, and the Patriots have done everything to set him up for success — overhauling the offensive line, adding weapons at wide receiver, and hiring a coordinator who knows how to develop young quarterbacks. Maye has the arm to make every NFL throw and the athleticism to extend plays. If New England's protection holds, he's a legitimate dark horse for most-improved-player honors.
2. Tank Dell — Houston Texans, WR
C.J. Stroud's rapport with his receivers is one of the NFL's best stories, and Tank Dell is poised to be the primary beneficiary in 2026. His explosiveness after the catch, his ability to win in traffic, and his comfort in Stroud's rhythm-based passing system make him a candidate for 80+ receptions and a Pro Bowl nod. Watch for him to become one of the AFC's most dangerous slot receivers.
3. Micah Parsons — Dallas Cowboys, LB (Finally Healthy)
Parsons has been the most disruptive pass rusher in the league when healthy, and a full 2026 season could cement his status as the best defensive player in football. When the Cowboys' front gets to operate without injury constraints and against opposing offensive lines that can't fully account for his first-step quickness, double-digit sacks and Defensive Player of the Year consideration are real possibilities.
4. Bijan Robinson — Atlanta Falcons, RB
The Falcons drafted Bijan Robinson eighth overall because they believed he was a generational running back talent, and the evidence is accumulating. A full season in Raheem Morris's offensive system — with a quarterback who can threaten the defense in the passing game — could unlock Robinson for 1,400+ rushing yards and double-digit touchdowns. Don't overlook his receiving ability, either: Robinson is a true three-down back.
5. Christian Wilkins — Las Vegas Raiders, DT
Interior disruptors are often the most underrated players in football, and Wilkins is one of the best in the business. His ability to collapse pockets, occupy multiple blockers, and make plays in the backfield gives Las Vegas a legitimate anchor piece for their defensive rebuild. In a division that features Mahomes, Herbert, and Nix, the Raiders need their defensive line to win individual battles — and Wilkins does that consistently.
The Common Thread
Every player on this list has one thing in common: organizational investment. Each franchise has built a system around these players' strengths rather than asking them to fit a rigid scheme. That alignment between player and system is the biggest predictor of a breakout season — and all five of these players have it entering 2026.
